Lent date
efkraft1 asked this question on 6/7/2000:
In the Catholic Church I believe that Easter is 40 days after lent.
Can you tell me how the date for Lent is determined?
mscperu gave this response on 6/8/2000:
Greetings:
As you can see the date is fixed for Easter and then lent begins accordingly. The date corresponds the Jewish Passover.
I want to add a curious information:
In Germany and other parts Easter is celebrated during two days. This has a parallel to the Jewish Passover.
The date was fixed traditionally by the High priest in Jerusalem and then send by messenger to the Jewish Communities all over the world.
The Jewish tradition follows the lunar cycle not that of the sun. There can be a difference of a day or so. The Jewish Communities far away from Jerusalem celebrate two days.
I have not been able to find out if the Catholic celebration of the two days is a parallel to the Jewish one.
Vale
